OUT OF RELIGION & INTO RELATIONSHIP

What if the problem isn’t your faith—but what you’ve been taught faith is supposed to look like?

You can believe in God and still be tired of the pressure, performance, formulas, and expectations that have accumulated around Him.

Maybe you’ve questioned things you once accepted without hesitation. Maybe church no longer feels like the place where you encounter God most clearly. Or maybe you simply sense that knowing about God was never supposed to be the same as actually knowing Him.

Out of Religion & Into Relationship is an invitation to move beyond the religious noise and rediscover a more personal, Spirit-led relationship with God—one built on trust, honest conversation, and learning to recognize His presence in everyday life.

God was never meant to remain distant.

Is This Book for You?

MAYBE YOU HAVEN’T LOST YOUR FAITH

Maybe the faith you were given no longer fits the relationship with God you’re longing for.

You may still believe in God. You may still love Him.

But somewhere along the way, the structures that were supposed to help you know Him may have begun getting in the way.

Perhaps you’ve found yourself:

Tired of performing — trying to pray enough, believe enough, serve enough, or get everything right enough to feel secure with God.

Questioning things you were taught — and wondering whether asking difficult questions makes you unfaithful.

Disappointed by church — hurt, disillusioned, or simply aware that participation and spiritual intimacy aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Unsure how to hear God for yourself — especially when His voice seems buried beneath Scripture interpretations, religious expectations, fear, and other people’s certainty.

Going through the motions — doing the things Christians are supposed to do while privately wondering why God still seems distant.

Longing for something more personal — not a new religious system, but a relationship with God that can actually be lived, experienced, and trusted.

You don’t have to choose between pretending everything is fine and walking away from God.

There is another possibility.

Some of what you’re questioning may not be God at all. It may be what accumulated around Him.

Out of Religion & Into Relationship was written for that space.

Just Knowing About God versus Knowing Him

THE DIFFERENCE IS RELATIONSHIP

Knowing about God and knowing Him are not the same thing.

You can know Scripture. Understand doctrine. Attend church. Pray, serve, give, and sincerely try to live faithfully—and still wonder why God sometimes feels more like someone you believe in than Someone you actually know.

That distinction changed everything for me.

I began to understand that the practices of faith were never supposed to become substitutes for relationship with God. At their best, they help us recognize Him, respond to Him, and grow in trust.

The goal was never simply to become better at Christianity.
The invitation was to know God.

Because relationship changes the question.

Instead of only asking:

What am I supposed to believe?

…we begin asking:

God, what are You showing me?

Instead of:

What am I supposed to do?

…we learn to ask:

God, how are You leading me?

Instead of:

Am I getting this right?

…we can begin asking:

Do I trust the One I’m walking with?

These questions don’t make Scripture, wisdom, community, or spiritual practice less important.

It puts them back in their proper place.

They become ways of helping us walk with God rather than measurements we use to prove ourselves to Him.

This is the movement at the heart of the book.

From performance to trust.
From formulas to discernment.
From knowing about God to knowing Him.
From religion as a substitute for relationship to faith that grows out of it.

That is what Out of Religion & Into Relationship invites you to explore.

PART I

SEE GOD AGAIN

God & Man

Before reconsidering religion, we need to reconsider some of what we believe about God.

Explore the character of a God greater than our misconceptions, what sin has—and hasn’t—done to our relationship with Him, and the significance of what Christ accomplished through redemption and restoration.

The starting point isn’t becoming worthy enough to reach God.
It’s recognizing what God has already done to reach us.

PART II

SEPARATE RELATIONSHIP FROM RELIGION

Religion vs. Relationship

What happens when the structures created to support faith begin substituting for relationship with God?

This part examines the relationship restored through Christ, the transforming role of the Holy Spirit, why Scripture comes alive through the Spirit, and some of the historical and institutional patterns that helped shape Christianity as many of us experience it today.

The purpose isn’t to attack the Church.

It’s to distinguish the relationship from the structures that have grown around it.

PART III

LEARN TO ENGAGE GOD FOR YOURSELF

How to Converse With God

Relationship requires more than information about someone.

This part moves into the practice of relationship—learning to recognize God’s presence, listen, respond, discern His leading, and develop confidence through actual interaction with Him.

Not a formula for making God speak.
A way of becoming more attentive to the God who is already present.

PART IV

REBUILD FAITH AROUND RELATIONSHIP

Healing & Moving Forward

Leaving unhealthy assumptions behind is only part of the journey. Something healthier has to take their place.

The final movement turns toward rebuilding: examining the beliefs, patterns, words, and internal agreements that shape how we experience God; learning to trust Him differently; and developing a faith capable of being lived in the realities of everyday life.

The goal isn’t to reconstruct another religious system.
It’s to become increasingly confident walking with God yourself.

I Didn’t Learn This From a Distance

WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK

I knew God before I knew much about religion.

As a boy, talking with Him felt natural. God was present, personal, and accessible. But as I grew older, I also encountered something increasingly difficult to reconcile: the God I was learning about through religion didn’t always seem like the God I had come to know.

So I began asking questions.

At nineteen, those questions eventually became a simple prayer: God, if You want me to know something about You, teach me Yourself.

I had no idea where that prayer would lead.

What followed was not a rejection of Scripture, church, or Christian faith. It became a decades-long journey of learning to distinguish God from some of the assumptions I had inherited about Him—and discovering how deeply He desires relationship with us.

I studied. I taught. I served in ministry. I learned Scripture and theology. I experienced both the beauty and the failures of the Church.

But some of the most important things God taught me weren’t simply answers to theological questions.

He taught me how to walk with Him.

And then I discovered that knowing wasn’t enough.

There came a point when I was frustrated with God.

I had spent years studying, learning, teaching, and trying to help other people understand what I had come to understand. Yet I couldn’t make anyone see what I saw.

Eventually, I brought that frustration to Him.

The answer changed the way I understood everything that had come before:

I taught you. I can teach anyone.
It’s not about what you know.
It’s about relationship with Me.

That realization became one of the foundations of this book.

I couldn’t give someone else my relationship with God.

I couldn’t hand them my experiences, my understanding, or my certainty.

And I wasn’t supposed to.

I could help remove some of the obstacles that make relationship with God seem more complicated, distant, or inaccessible than it is—and then encourage people to discover that relationship for themselves.

That is why I wrote Out of Religion & Into Relationship.

I’m not asking you to borrow my relationship with God.

I want to help you discover your own.

This book is an invitation to begin—or begin again.

What Changes When Relationship Becomes the Foundation?

BEYOND INFORMATION

The goal isn’t simply to think differently about God. It’s to learn to walk with Him differently.

A book can give you ideas. It can challenge assumptions, offer new perspectives, and help you put words around things you’ve sensed for years.

But information alone isn’t the destination.

Out of Religion & Into Relationship is meant to help clear away some of what can make God seem distant, complicated, or inaccessible—so that relationship with Him becomes something you increasingly recognize, experience, and live.

GOD CAN BECOME MORE PERSONAL

God doesn’t have to remain someone you know primarily through what others have taught you. As you learn to recognize His presence in everyday life, relationship with Him can become more immediate, personal, and real.

QUESTIONS CAN BECOME PART OF FAITH

Honest questions don’t have to threaten your faith. They can become invitations to examine what you believe, seek God more deeply, and distinguish inherited assumptions from convictions formed through relationship with Him.

SCRIPTURE CAN BECOME CONVERSATION

The Bible can be more than information to understand or instructions to follow. As you engage Scripture with the Holy Spirit, reading can become part of an ongoing conversation in which you listen, respond, and grow in understanding.

DISCERNMENT CAN GROW FROM RELATIONSHIP

Hearing God isn’t about mastering a technique or being certain about every impression. Discernment develops as you learn His character, become attentive to His presence, test what you perceive, and grow in trust over time.

FAITH CAN MOVE FROM PERFORMANCE TO TRUST

Prayer, obedience, worship, and spiritual practice don’t have to be ways of proving yourself to God. They can become natural responses to a relationship already established by grace—and expressions of growing trust in the One you know.

YOU CAN LEARN TO WALK WITH GOD FOR YOURSELF

You were never meant to depend on someone else to maintain your relationship with God. Scripture, wise teachers, and healthy community still matter—but they can equip you to recognize, trust, and follow God more confidently for yourself.

The Final Word

WHEREVER YOU GO FROM HERE

The book isn’t the destination.

Maybe reading it will challenge something you’ve believed.

Maybe it will give language to something you’ve sensed for years.

Maybe it will raise new questions.

Or maybe it will simply help you create enough space to recognize that God has been nearer than you thought.

Whatever happens, my hope is not that you finish this book knowing more of what I believe.

My hope is that you become more confident knowing Him for yourself.

Religion may tell you about God.

Relationship is how you learn and get to know Him.

That’s the journey this book is inviting you to take.
