You’re Not Called to Chase Goals — You’re Called to Walk With God

Why “Goal Setting” Feels Off for So Many Believers

You’ve probably been taught to approach your life like something to optimize.

Set goals.

Make a plan.

Stay disciplined.

Even spiritually.

But if you’ve tried that, you may have noticed something:

It creates pressure… but not always clarity.

You can be moving forward—and still feel disconnected.

That’s because most goal-setting—even “biblical” goal-setting—still puts you in control.

And subtly turns God into:

πŸ‘‰ a consultant

πŸ‘‰ a guide

πŸ‘‰ or a blessing over your plans

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” — Proverbs 14:12

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” — Psalm 127:1

Effort without alignment still leads to frustration.

What Scripture Actually Emphasizes

Jesus never taught people how to set better goals.

He didn’t give frameworks for achievement.

He gave an invitation:

“Follow me.” — Matthew 4:19

“Abide in me, and I in you…” — John 15:4

That’s not a strategy.

That’s a relationship.

And relationship changes everything.

The Subtle Trap of “Christian Productivity”

It’s easy to take the language of faith…

and apply it to a performance mindset.

“God gave me this vision”

“I need to steward this calling”

“I need to maximize my potential”

Some of that is true.

But underneath it can still be driven by:

πŸ‘‰ control

πŸ‘‰ urgency

πŸ‘‰ fear of missing something

Instead of trust.

“Be anxious for nothing…” — Philippians 4:6

“Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength…” — Isaiah 40:31

God is not asking you to optimize your life.

He’s inviting you to walk with Him in it.

What Alignment Actually Looks Like

Instead of asking:

“What should I accomplish?”

You begin asking:

“What is God doing… and how do I respond?”

This is the difference between:

πŸ‘‰ striving

and

πŸ‘‰ alignment

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” — Proverbs 3:6

“The steps of a man are established by the Lord…” — Psalm 37:23

Notice:

You don’t create the path.

You recognize it.

How Clarity Actually Emerges

Clarity doesn’t usually come all at once.

It unfolds through:

  • awareness
  • response
  • trust

As you begin to:

  • notice what God is highlighting
  • follow what you already sense
  • stop forcing outcomes

Direction becomes clearer.

Not because you planned it.

But because you stayed aligned.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105

A lamp doesn’t show the whole road.

Just the next step.

Where Coaching Fits

A coach isn’t there to help you:

  • set better goals
  • push harder
  • or stay accountable to a plan

The role is to help you:

  • recognize where you’re forcing outcomes
  • see where God is already leading
  • trust what you’re discerning

“The Spirit of truth… will guide you into all truth.” — John 16:13

The goal is not achievement.

It’s alignment with the Spirit of God.

What Begins to Change

When you stop chasing and start aligning:

  • pressure begins to lift
  • decisions become clearer
  • comparison loses its grip
  • timing becomes less anxious

You begin to move with God…

instead of trying to get ahead of Him.

“You will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.’” — Isaiah 30:21

You Don’t Need Better Goals

You don’t need:

  • a clearer 5-year plan
  • more discipline
  • or better strategies

You need:

πŸ‘‰ clearer sight

πŸ‘‰ deeper trust

πŸ‘‰ and a real relationship with God

Everything else flows from that.

If something in this resonates, don’t rush to “apply it.”

Just begin to notice:

πŸ‘‰ where you’ve been striving

πŸ‘‰ where you’ve been forcing direction

And where God may already be leading.

If you want space to explore that more deeply,

that’s exactly what we cultivate inside EK Tribes.
