God Talks, the Framework Behind It, and What I Built to Take You Further
If you’ve been trying to reconnect with God and keep hitting a wall, the problem probably isn’t effort or information. For many people carrying religious hurt, the block is structural. It was built into them through years of performance-based faith. This article explains what the God Talks framework offers, where it ends, and what my EDGe Coaching approach is designed to do that a book alone cannot.
Key Takeaways
- God Talks is a framework for developing a conversational friendship with God, and it opens something real for people who’ve felt spiritually cut off
- A book can give you permission to hear God again, but it cannot dismantle the conditioning that made you stop trusting what you heard
- My EDGe Coaching framework is built specifically for people whose disconnection is structural, not circumstantial
- The EDGe Alignment Cohort is a group coaching experience, not a course. The difference is real-time accountability and a community that doesn’t feel like another version of what hurt you
- If you’ve already explored God Talks and still feel stuck, the problem isn’t the material. It’s what the material can’t address on its own
What Is God Talks and Why Does It Resonate With So Many People?
God Talks is a book built around one central idea: God actually wants to talk with you, and you can learn to hear Him. That’s a friendship framework, not a doctrine framework. And for someone who’s spent years inside performance-based religion being told that God speaks through institutions, hierarchies, and qualified intermediaries, that idea lands like something being unlocked.
The reason it resonates isn’t complicated. It hands people permission. Permission to believe that direct, personal conversation with God is real, available, and not reserved for people who pray the right way or attend the right services. For a spiritually exhausted believer, that permission matters.
I became a “God Talks” Certified Coach because I believe in what that framework opens. I use it as a starting point with people who are ready to hear God clearly again, or maybe for the first time.
But here’s what I want you to understand before we go further.
A book that gives you permission to hear God cannot also heal the wound that made you stop trusting what you hear.
Why Does This Framework Work for Some People and Leave Others Feeling Stuck?
The people who encounter God Talks and experience immediate shift are usually people whose disconnection was circumstantial. Life got loud. They drifted. The material re-orients them and they’re moving again.
The people who engage with it carefully and still feel stuck are usually carrying something different. Their disconnection isn’t circumstantial. It’s structural. It was layered over years through religious conditioning that taught them God is distant, disappointed, or only reachable through the right behaviors and the right people in the right seats.
For that second group, the problem isn’t a lack of information about how God communicates. The problem is that their nervous system, their self-concept, and their entire mental framework around God were shaped by a system that was never designed to give them direct access in the first place.
You cannot read your way out of that. Something different is required.
This is what I consistently see in the people who come to me after years of sermons, devotionals, prayer journals, and spiritual books. They know the language. They’ve done the practices. The silence or the distance still feels real. That isn’t spiritual failure. That’s a structural problem that needs a structural solution. If you’ve been trying to figure out why hearing God clearly still feels out of reach, you’re not broken. You’re dealing with a specific kind of block that requires specific work.
What Is EDGe Coaching and How Does It Actually Work?
EDGe is the framework I developed for people who are done circling the same wall. It works through four movements: Examining your current spiritual positioning honestly, Dismantling the conditioning that is blocking direct access, Grounding yourself in who you actually are in relationship with God, and Engaging from that place with consistency.
This isn’t a course. Courses deliver content. The EDGe Alignment Cohort creates a container, a structured environment where the work happens in real time, with real people, with me present to recalibrate when someone hits a wall that the material alone wouldn’t help them name.
Here’s why that distinction matters practically. Religious hurt doesn’t heal in isolation. It also doesn’t heal inside a crowd that reproduces the environment that caused it. The Cohort is intentionally neither. It’s small enough to be personal, structured enough to produce real movement, and built entirely around building a direct relationship with God that doesn’t require a hierarchy to function.
Consider what this looks like in a typical case. Someone joins the Cohort after years of church involvement, a painful exit, and months of trying to reconnect through books and podcasts. They know what they want. They keep hitting the same internal ceiling. Inside the Cohort, that ceiling gets named. It gets examined. And it gets worked through in community with people who’ve encountered the same one. That isn’t something a solo devotional practice can replicate, because the thing keeping them stuck isn’t information. It’s a pattern that became invisible through repetition, and patterns like that need outside perspective to surface.
The Cohort also addresses something that trips up nearly everyone who’s been hurt by religion: why consistency with God feels so difficult. It isn’t a discipline problem. It’s a trust problem. And trust doesn’t rebuild through more effort. It rebuilds through repeated safe experience. That’s what the Cohort is designed to provide.
If you want to understand whether the EDGe Alignment Cohort is the right next step for where you are right now, I’ve written about that directly.
How Does This Compare to Going It Alone or Trying Other Approaches?
| Approach | What It Actually Addresses | What It Cannot Do | Who It Fits Best |
|---|---|---|---|
| God Talks framework as a standalone book | Permission to hear God, conversational posture toward relationship | Religious conditioning, trust wounds, no accountability when stuck | People whose disconnection is circumstantial, not structural |
| Self-directed practice (journaling, podcasts, devotionals) | Personal discipline, quiet reflection | No recalibration, isolation compounds the block over time | People with a stable spiritual foundation who drifted |
| Waiting and hoping the disconnection resolves on its own | Nothing. Waiting is not a strategy here. | The structural conditioning doesn’t untangle without directed work | Nobody. This is the most expensive choice you can make. |
| EDGe Alignment Cohort | Structural conditioning, trust wounds, hearing God, real community, live recalibration | Not a substitute for clinical mental health care when active crisis is present | People with religious hurt who want a direct, personal relationship with God |
The most expensive move in this space isn’t investing in the wrong program. The most expensive move is waiting. Structural religious conditioning doesn’t soften over time on its own. It calcifies. Every year spent circling the same wall without named, directed work is a year of the relationship you were created for sitting just out of reach.
For a fuller picture of what EDGe coaching actually offers and what it doesn’t, I’ve covered that in detail. Read it before you decide anything.
Who This Work Is Not Right For
Straight talk here, because I’d rather lose someone now than have them join the Cohort before they’re ready for it.
If you’re in an active crisis, stabilization comes first. Transformation work done before you’re stable doesn’t accelerate healing. It retraumatizes. If that’s where you are, please get that support first. Then come back.
If you’re looking for a new version of church with a leader to follow and a community to conform to, this isn’t that. The entire point of EDGe work is helping you stop outsourcing your relationship with God to a system. If that’s not what you want yet, the book is a better starting point.
If you’re still deciding whether God is personally accessible to you at all, start with the material and let it do what it does. Then come back when you’re ready to work through what’s still in the way.
The signs of religious trauma are worth naming before you choose your next step. What you’re carrying shapes what you need.
What Comes After the Cohort?
The Cohort is designed to get you to a place where you’re walking with God directly and consistently, without needing a coach to make it function. That’s the goal. You own the relationship. Not a system.
For people who want continued one-on-one support, my Kingdom Alignment coaching is available. For people who want a more self-paced path, the Knowing God Without the Noise guided personal journey is there. My podcast, The Ekklesian, covers the ongoing questions that surface when you’re living outside religious frameworks and trying to stay grounded.
And my book, Out of Religion & Into Relationship: Connecting With God Beyond The Church Walls, is the written foundation underneath all of it. I’m also a contributing author to the Beauty for Ashes anthology, which you can find at abovethesun.org if you want more context.
Every piece of this points toward the same outcome: a direct, personal, pressure-free relationship with God that belongs to you. Not to a leader. Not to a program. To you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to read God Talks before joining the EDGe Alignment Cohort?
No. The Cohort draws on the God Talks framework as one tool among several, and I walk you through what’s relevant as the work unfolds. If you haven’t read it and you’re curious, it’s worth your time as a standalone starting point. But it isn’t a prerequisite.
Is the EDGe Alignment Cohort the same as a church small group?
It’s structurally different in ways that matter. There’s no doctrinal agenda, no attendance expectations tied to belonging, and no institutional hierarchy. It’s a coaching container, not a religious community. The goal is your direct relationship with God, not group conformity to a shared belief system.
How is this different from seeing a therapist or counselor?
Therapy and spiritual coaching address different layers of the same wound. A therapist works on emotional and psychological stabilization, which is genuinely valuable and sometimes necessary first. What I do works on the framework you use to relate to God directly. If your disconnection is rooted in religious conditioning, that specific layer isn’t something clinical therapy is designed to address. That’s where this work lives. If you’re wondering whether healing from toxic religious environments requires both, the honest answer for some people is yes.
What does “God Talks” Certified Coach actually mean?
It means I’ve been trained and certified in the God Talks methodology for helping people develop a conversational relationship with God. It’s a specific coaching framework, not a general credential. I use it as one component within my broader EDGe approach, which is my own framework for working through religious conditioning and rebuilding direct access to God.
How long does the EDGe Alignment Cohort take?
I don’t attach a fixed timeline to this, because the honest answer is that it depends on what you’re carrying. Structural conditioning that’s been in place for years doesn’t resolve in a weekend. What I can tell you is that the Cohort is built for real movement, not indefinite processing. You’ll know once you’re inside it whether it’s working.
I’ve tried other spiritual programs and they felt like a different version of what I left. Why would this be different?
That’s exactly the right question. Most alternatives hand you a new leader, a new system, a new set of expectations. The shape is different. The dynamic isn’t. The EDGe framework is specifically designed to dismantle that pattern rather than reproduce it. The real test isn’t what I say about it. It’s whether you feel more directly connected to God or more dependent on a system after work. If you want a clearer sense of what having a real relationship with God without religion actually requires, that’s worth reading before you decide.
Can I start with something smaller before committing to the Cohort?
Yes. The Knowing God Without the Noise guided personal journey is a lower-commitment entry point. My book and podcast are free starting places. The Cohort is there when you’re ready for the kind of work that actually produces structural change. You don’t have to start at the deep end.
